Boards

Columns of cards you drag through your work, with the widgets that tell you how it is going.

A board is where Plan mode work happens: columns your cards move through, a header of widgets that tell you how it is going, and the cards themselves.

Pick a board

An empty Plan tab shows Start with a Board in the middle. Each choice is a small picture of the board; pick one and it is placed, empty, ready to build. More are in the palette's Boards category.

BoardFor
BlankA board with no columns: name the first one and build from there.
KanbanFlow from Backlog to Done, with WIP limits on the busy columns.
SprintA sprint's tasks, a row per person, with estimates.
RetroNotes hidden until you reveal them, then everyone votes.
RoadmapProjects on Now, Next and Later.
Bug TriageBugs from New to Fixed, a row per priority.
WeekA column a day, Monday to Friday.
All CardsEvery card in the document, a row per status, so nothing gets lost.
ArchiveEvery archived card, out of the way, ready to restore.

A board placed from the palette or the picker starts empty: its columns are its own, so cards from your other boards stay where they are. Boards from a template are set up for their job and come with no cards either.

Columns

Hover a column's head and press its cog (always there on a phone) to:

  • Rename it and give it a colour.
  • Set a WIP limit: the count turns amber when the column holds more.
  • Make it Counts as Done, so its cards fill the board's Completion.
  • Set its Width: one, two or three slots across the board.
  • Move it left or right, add a column after it, or remove it (it asks where its cards go).

A board with no columns asks you to name the first.

The board's own settings

Right-click the board (or select it and press ⋯):

  • Board: its title, and its Swimlanes: none, or a row per assignee, card type, priority, project or status. Under By a Field, pick any field your card types have, your own included (say a Customer you added to Projects), or Labels, Estimate, Start Date or Due Date. A choice field gets a row per option, a checkbox a Yes and a No row, numbers and dates run lowest first, and text runs A to Z; cards without a value sit in the last row. Dropping a card into a row sets that field (into a label's row, that label moves to the front of the card's labels). If the field is later taken off its type, the board simply shows no rows until it comes back.
  • Cards: which card types New Cards Can Be (a retro takes Notes and Ideas; a sprint takes Tasks and Actions), the Card Size (Minimal, Compact or Detailed), and which fields each card shows.

While a board is selected, the grip beside its title is where to take hold of it to move it.

Widgets

The header holds widgets: Item Count, Completion, Filter, Only Mine, People, Not on Board, Card Types, WIP Alerts, Due Soon, Votes Left, Points, Priorities, Unassigned, Top Voted and Stale Cards. Each board type starts with the ones that suit it.

  • Add one: drag it from the palette's Widgets category into the header, or press the + at the end of the header.
  • Arrange them: drag left or right, or focus one and press Alt+← or Alt+→. Take one off with its × or Delete.
  • Narrow the board: press a person in People, a type in Card Types, a priority, Unassigned or the overdue count; press again to see everything. Item Count reads "3 of 14 · Show all" while the board is narrowed.

Archive and All Cards

Archive a card (right-click it) to take it off every board without deleting it; the Archive board shows them all, and Restore brings one back. The All Cards board shows every other card with a row per status: the place to find a card no board shows.
