Wireframe Pages

A screen to wireframe, framed by the device it is for: a phone, a tablet, a laptop, a desktop, a browser or a watch.

A wireframe page is a kind of page in Pages mode: a screen to wireframe on, framed by the device it is for. The page is the device, drawn front on at its real size, and everything you put on the page lives on its screen.

Adding a Wireframe Page

  • Press the + after the last page and choose Wireframe, or choose Wireframe when a new tab's first page asks what it is for.
  • Then Choose a Device: an iPhone, an iPhone Duo (Apple's foldable, opened to one wide 890 x 626 screen), an Android phone, an iPad or Android tablet, a Laptop, a Desktop monitor, a Browser window, or a Watch. Each screen is the device's real size in pixels (an iPhone is 393 x 852), so a wireframe is drawn at the size it will be seen.
  • A new wireframe page after another takes the same device and frame, so a flow of screens stays consistent.

Changing the Device

Beside the page's cog sits the Device button, showing the page's device. It opens:

  • Device: switch to any other device. What is on the screen comes with it, scaled down only if it no longer fits.
  • Orientation: turn a phone or tablet to Landscape.
  • Frame: Theme (the default) draws the device in your tab theme's colours, browser toolbar included, so it changes when the theme does; or choose Dark, Light, or Outline for a low-fidelity line drawing.
  • System Bars: the status bar (9:41, signal, Wi-Fi and battery) and the home indicator, on by default. They are drawn over your content, as a real screen draws them; turn them off for a bare screen.

The same choices are in the page's cog panel, on Device. A Browser page's address bar shows the page's name, so naming the page Pricing shows example.com/pricing.

The Screen

  • The page's Background paints the screen. A Grid pattern makes a handy layout grid.
  • Anything that reaches past the screen's edge is cut off at it, rounded corners included, never drawn over the frame.
  • Elements snap to the screen's edges and centre lines, and to its safe area: the screen less its system bars and a gutter (16 px on a phone, 24 on a tablet, 32 on a computer).

Starting From a Screen

The Layout button above a wireframe page offers forty screens in nine categories, each built for the device you chose: a single column on a phone, sidebars and columns on a tablet or computer.

  • Start: Onboarding, Sign In, Sign Up, Verify Code, Permissions and an Empty State.
  • Browse: a Home Feed, Search Results, an Article and Places on a map.
  • Shop: a Shop Grid, a Product Detail, a Cart, a Checkout and Order Tracking.
  • Social: a Profile, a Post with comments, a Stories Feed, a New Post, a Chat and Notifications.
  • Work: a Dashboard, a Kanban Board, a Task List, a Calendar, an Inbox and a Data Table.
  • Media: a Music Player, a Video Player, a Podcast and a Photo Gallery.
  • Account: Settings, Edit Profile and a Help Center.
  • Marketing: a Landing Page, Pricing, a Team page, a Contact form and a Blog.
  • Travel: a Flight Search, a Boarding Pass and a Ride.

A watch has nine of its own: a Glance, a List, a Workout, Now Playing, Weather, a Timer, Heart Rate, Up Next and a Notification. Every part of a layout is an ordinary element you can edit, move or delete.

Wireframe Templates

Start Making Pages has a Wireframes group:

  • Blank wireframes: one empty screen in a Phone, Tablet, Website (browser), Laptop or Watch.
  • Ready-made flows, a row of screens to make your own: a Mobile App Wireframe (onboarding to checkout on an iPhone), a Website Wireframe (home, pricing and sign in), a Web App Wireframe (a dashboard, an orders table and settings on a laptop), a Tablet App Wireframe and a Watch App Wireframe.

The Elements Palette

On a wireframe page the palette changes to suit it: Components and Elements come first on the strip, and Elements opens by itself. Move to another kind of page and the palette changes with you. It holds the parts a screen is made of: a Button and an Outline Button, a Text Field and a Search Field, a Chip, a Badge (with the same presets as in Diagram mode: New, Beta, Version, Count, Draft and Warning), an Image Placeholder, an Avatar, a Card, a Checklist and a Divider. Text and sticky notes for comments on the design are in Write.

Exporting

Export a wireframe page as PNG, SVG or PDF from Export: you get the whole device with your screen in it. PNG and SVG are see-through around the device, ready to drop into a deck or a document.
